Family Sponsorship

The goal of family class immigration is to reunite the families in Canada as per Section 12(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). This allows a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to sponsor, on basis of their relationship, the spouse, common-law partner, child, parent or other prescribed family members.

Who can be sponsored?

  • Spouse, common-law partners, conjugal partner
  • Dependent child
  • Children adopted for adoption
  • Parents, grandparents and their dependent children
  • Brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, and grandchildren who are orphaned, who are under 18, and who are not a spouse or common law partner
  • Any relative, if the sponsor is alone in Canada without family members and has none of the above family members to sponsor

Who can sponsor?

  • Canadian citizen or
  • Person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act or
  • Permanent resident of Canada
